Groningen Grid
Sometimes humans make something of which one says: You wondered if you could, but you never stopped to ask if you should. I think that's a quote from Jurassic Park. Anyway, the Groningen Grid map (this is the updated second edition), is a city map-turned-subway map. Using the same rules as a diagrammatic transit map, all streets are angled either 0º, 90º or 45º. They still had to intersect roughly where they would in real life, but the lengths of the streets were secondary to where they intersect. So all the junctions are still intact - they may just be farther apart, or closer by, than in real life. This resulted in a completely different look at the medieval city of Groningen. Where it is more curved and rounded, the city is now...
Shinkansen Map
I just wanted to make one. It was that simple. I wanted one clean and simple and clear. It was printed on (very) heavy paper stock. However, if I ever do a second run, I'd really like to know how I can improve on this map? This map features a few illustrations and every station has their names in English and Japanese. Major stations (where every service stops) are emphasized. I'm not really sure anymore why I combined a few of the lines on the JR East lines to the north. The logic behind that eludes me, but I must have had a reason. I experimented with mountains, how many, how few. A smattering of mountains and a smidge of waves (in the oceans) really worked to break the monotony of the great empty spaces. It could probably be even...
Postcode Map of the Netherlands
The Dutch postcode system is unique in the world. It's very simple and you can easily deduce an address with 4 numbers, 2 letters and a house number. In that sense it's very simple. This map was a brainfart that I wanted to see realized. By creating hexagons of every municipality with a postcode, one gets this weird map with its unique groupings. Instinctively Dutch people kind of know where which postcodes are. But reality is a little stranger. I never thought the 7000-series postcodes were all the way up in Drenthe. Or that Flevoland would be as split as it is, between 1300, 3800 and 8X00. This map features an index of every postcode and its province. And a full history and explanation of postcodes in the Netherlands. You don't...
Rotterdam Rail Map
Making a rail map for the city of Rotterdam turned out to be harder than anticipated, due to the city's long horizontal and vertical axes. The city is famous for its port and its no-nonsense character. I wanted to apply the same style of the Amsterdam Rail Map to Rotterdam (and a map of The Hague). However, this city required the use of insets to fully display everything on the B2 landscape poster. Just as the Amsterdam one (and the abandoned The Hague one), the problem with these maps is the changing of timetables and services. It's tedious to keep updating these, especially as very few people actually get one. It was fun, but it was a one-off. And the The Hague version will probably never be finished (sorry). You can get the...
Dutch Railway Map 2024
This is the most comprehensive railway map of the Netherlands you can purchase. It is an iteration on the 2021 version of this map, with updates to the Oude Lijn: New future stations and a few actual new stations. Also, the colors have been updated to increase contrast between electrified and not-electrified lines. The lightblue has been replaced with a green color. It features all major (heavy) railway passenger lines from the past, current and (possible) future. It includes every station that ever was, is and may be. It also features the museum lines because they deserve every mention they can get. It's a nice sister map of the Dutch Highway Map. It features hundreds of stations and multiple lines that no longer exist. This includes...
Valentine Island postcard
Postcards can be great for maps, however I hardly ever finished making one. They are small, and really only one-use. I think it may make more sense to make these, if I make a pack of cards. But good ideas have eluded me, for now. Anyway, the Valentine Island card is one that did make sense, because I expanded the idea and even wrote a little backstory about this place. Valentine Island is a Valentine's Day card. A folding postcard with an (imaginary) history of the island on the back. There are a lot of word jokes and little easter eggs on this map. All love-themed, obviously. The map itself is a large heart (clearly), but it is also pierced by an arrow (see Feather Island in the south west and the arrowhead Arrow Island in the north...
Blade Runner Timelines
I just love the Blade Runner movies. Blade Runner 2049 had already been out for a while and I wanted to do something for or with that movie. Something that could be set within that world. This is the result of that. It's not really a map, per se. It's more of a subway map-inspired infographic, showing the timelines of both movies in one poster. The vertical columns that intersect with the nodes denote the locations of the scenes. The labels with every node are quotes or other words relating to those scenes. The main protagonists (Deckard in the original, K in the sequal) have completely straight lines. Other characters enter and leave the main line. It becomes clear where scenes take place without, or away from, K and Deckard. It...
Amsterdam Rail Map
This is a map I started and finished back in 2020, when there was nothing better to do. This map consists of all rail modes that one can find in Amsterdam: Heavy rail, metro and tram. Waterways and the highways are shown for reference. I really wanted to present a soft, friendly map. The lines were curved, the typography was rounded and bold. The colors bright and rich in contrast. It's a very detailed map, considering the information provided. I still like the design choices that were made. However, once sold out, there probably won't be a new version as demand has always been low. It takes a lot of time and effort to make and update a map like this, and I feel it just isn't novel enough compared to what already exists (in official...
Catropolis Metro
This map was first released back in 2019. Since then it's not really sold well, until 2024 when I posted a video about it to Instagram. I'm pretty happy this map has found its audience ☺️ Here's a quick post to confirm its existence 😅. Get it here: https://www.studiolegenda.com/collections/all/products/catropolis-metro I'm not going to spoil all the easter eggs, but here are a few hints: There are small illustrations scattered around the map. Some of the points of interest come in certain numbers. Every domestic breed is on it, from Abyssinian to York Chocolate. There are puns. There are famous cats. In fact, if you know how or where to look, there are 2 large cats in the poster. It's available on B2-sized posters. Currently it is...
Dutch Highway Map 2024
The 2024 edition of the Dutch Highway Map was released in a rush, after I quickly ran out of the 2021 version of the map. Luckily, it required very little tweaks to bring it up to date. It's been released and available at https://www.studiolegenda.com/collections/all/products/dutch-highway-map-2024 The biggest change is that to the Blankenburgverbinding (A24).
